About TAGMO
TAGMO’s food tells stories of migration, cultural exchange and self-determination in the diaspora.
TAGMO opened in September 2021 on Front Street in Downtown Manhattan, overlooking the cobblestone streets of the South Seaport district and the breezy East River esplanade of the Lower East Side. Circa the 1700s, ships once brought in spices from India’s farmlands to Manhattan’s shore. Today, those spices bring our food to life.

TAGMO, which means tigress in Bhutanese, started with a literal dream that Surbhi had about a tigress.
In South Asian culture, the tigress is an iconic symbol of feminine strength. She represents a type of power that protects rather than harms. The word ‘TAGMO’ embodies this feminine energy that guides TAGMO. We want to collaborate, not compete – not make space for just ourselves, but other people around us!
With two decades of professional culinary experience, chef Surbhi Sahni brings home cooking traditions to modern Indian cuisine and confections. As a proud Indian chef and female entrepreneur, Sahni pushes back against the manufactured prestige of Eurocentric cuisine and uses her platform to restore dignity to the legacies of home cooks, vegetable growers, rice farmers, and spice wallahs who have nurtured Indian regional cuisine for centuries.
